Revealed: Coalition Targets Five Governors (Details Emerge)

Published

on

The African Democratic Congress, which is the platform of the coalition of opposition leaders, is making moves to convert no fewer than five sitting governors before the 2027 general elections, findings by Saturday PUNCH have revealed.

Insiders told Saturday PUNCH that the ADC would benefit from the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party by having some governors of the party join the coalition.

This is just as five leaders of the PDP in five states have resigned from the party to join the ADC.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, former Senate President, David Mark, and other coalition leaders on Wednesday formally adopted the ADC as the platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Mark and a former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, were announced as the Interim National Chairman and Secretary of the party, respectively.

Prominent members of the All Progressives Congress, including former National Chairman of the party, John Oyegun; ex-Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, attended the programme and subsequently resigned their membership of the APC to join the ADC.

Similarly, notable PDP chieftains, including ex-National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal; and former governors of Jigawa, Cross River, Benue, Imo, Niger, and Ebonyi states—Sule Lamido, Liyel Imoke, Gabriel Suswam, Emeka Ihedioha, Babangida Aliyu, and Sam Egwu, respectively —have also aligned with the coalition.

The serving senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, a member of the Labour Party, also attended the event.

Five PDP governors to join us — ADC insiders
A credible source in the ADC disclosed that five PDP governors were expected to join the party.

The insider, a former senator from Katsina State, said, “Five PDP governors have given us their commitment; they are going to join us, but they want to see the end of Wike’s drama in the PDP. Hopefully, we will meet them by the end of their next convention and review things.

“What people don’t know is that some of the governors, including those in the APC, are supporting us. We started this coalition planning 18 months ago, and some APC governors were contacted about a year ago. So, they are with us, but I won’t tell you any names.”

Another insider, an aide to one of the former ministers and ex-governors, said he was aware that leaders of the coalition, including his principal, were in touch with seven governors on the move to sway them to the ADC.

But the source didn’t mention the political parties of the said governors.

“Why are you interested in knowing the governors we’re talking to? You want us to put everything we’re doing on the pages of a newspaper? No! But I can tell you that we are talking to seven governors, and they are from the southern and northern parts of the country,” the source said.

When contacted, the immediate past National Chairman of the ADC, Ralph Nwosu, declined to comment on the governors’ planning to join the ADC.

“That is a top-secret matter. You can’t hear it from me. If you ask about other matters regarding the coalition, you are very welcome,” he said.

This comes barely a month after a chieftain of the ADC in Plateau State, Dr Sani Dawop, disclosed that about seven APC governors had secretly been funding “an opposition coalition” against Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.

Dawop, in an interview with Trust TV News on June 9, said, “There are about six to seven APC governors who are funding the coalition. Go and check and do your investigation. There are lots of issues happening, and even within the APC, there are those who are not happy with the way things are going.”

Primate Elijah Ayodele, the founder and spiritual leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has issued a stern warning to Nigerian governors regarding their aspirations for a second term in office in 2027.

In a public statement released by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Primate Ayodele elaborated on the challenges these governors may face in their quest for re-election,  indicating that without sincere efforts and dedication, their ambitions for a second term might be hindered.

The warning serves as a wake-up call for these leaders to recognize the potential obstacles ahead and to engage in the necessary actions to secure their political futures.

“The governors of Akwa Ibom, Delta, Enugu, Cross River, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Ondo must work well to get a second term in office.

“It’s not certain for them except they work hard and pray. This is a hint of what they should be expecting.

“They need to work very well so that they won’t lose their second-term ambition,” he revealed.

Primate Ayodele also warned the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to be careful and prayerful so that his second term as Senate President will not be traded.

“Senate President Godswill Akpabio must be very careful and prayerful to get a second term as Senate president. I see his position being traded; he must work very hard to avoid it.”

Likewise, Primate Ayodele revealed that prominent senators and members of the House of Representatives will not return for a second term, too, while warning Ned Nwoko of Delta against his governorship ambition, saying it’s not yet his time.

Niger Poised As Decentralized Electricity Model Under Tinubu's Act – Santuraki

Special adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on policy communication, Daniel Bwala, ruled out the possibility of any political figure, including for- mer President Goodluck Jonathan, defeating Tinubu the 2027 election

Bwala, who was a guest on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, was asked if there is a need to worry over the recent clamour for Jonathan to run for of- fice in 2027

Some political stakeholders have claimed that Jonathan would be one of the leading candidates to confront incumbent President Tinubu in the 2027 general election

dailyvoice.ng reports that rumours swirled in Nigeria over a possible 2027 presidential run by ex-leader Goodluck Jonathan.

Bwala’s video can be watched here

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday night, August 12 nonitored by Legit.ng, Bwala spoke on if a Jonathan comeback bid could rattle President Tinubu

Recently, former Jigawa state governor, Sule Lamido, threw his weight behind Jonathan as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP’s) strongest option or the 2027 presidential election.

This is as he urged the party to “woo” him back into its fold.

Reacting to the CaMS for Jonathan to contest against Tinubu, Bwala said:

“I see that some unscrupulous elements are trying to hoodwink former President Goodluck Jonathan to come into politics so that they can destroy his reputation, which after he left government he has been building by becoming an international figure globally.”

Bwala explained that Tinubu has ‘captured”the, south south geopolitical zone where Jonathan comes from.

He continued: “The elements that are going to him in the north, asking him to run, where they not the ones that chased him away? So, what hope does he have that this time around, they are calling him because they mean well for him?

“Then, look at the political class that are coming to- gether to cajole him to come into politics. I know former President Goodluck Jonathan is smarter than that. But if former President Jonathan decides to run, let me tell you, I have seen the political cli- mate in Nigeria today, andt will speak to facts, not conjectures, there is not a single politician that has the capacity to knock off President Bola Tinubu – in all fronts.”
