‘Profound Sadness’: Peter Obi Grieves Death of Influential Christian Leader
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections, on Thursday morning, July 16, 2026, announced the death of Reverend William Okoye, whom he described as a distinguished figure within the All Christians Fellowship Mission (ACFM).
Obi broke the news in a personal statement, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a cleric he said belonged to a generation of spiritual leaders defined not by fame or large platforms but by the genuine depth of their influence on ordinary people.
Obi wrote in his tribute shared on his verified X page on Thursday morning, July 16: “Rev. Okoye belonged to that rare generation of spiritual leaders who understood that the true measure of ministry is not in the size of its platforms but in the depth of its impact on humanity.”
According to Obi, Rev. Okoye spent his ministry equipping people to live with purpose, discipline, and moral conviction. The politician credited the late cleric with inspiring countless individuals through his teachings, personal conduct, and leadership within the ACFM body.
The presidential hopeful described the death as a blow not only to the Okoye family and the wider Christian community but also to Nigeria as a nation, noting that the country currently stands in need of voices capable of fostering unity and healing.
He said: “His passing is a great loss to his family, the entire All Christians Fellowship Mission (ACFM), the Body of Christ, and our dear nation, Nigeria, at a time when our country yearns for voices that unite, heal, and inspire people to pursue justice, peace, and compassion.”
While acknowledging the grief surrounding the cleric’s departure, Obi struck a note of celebration, saying the life Rev. Okoye lived warranted recognition rather than grief alone.
He expressed confidence that the values the reverend championed would outlast his physical presence and continue shaping lives across generations.
Obi closed his tribute with a direct appeal, urging those who mourn the cleric to honour his memory by committing themselves to selfless living, sincere love, and diligent work toward building a just and peaceful Nigeria.
Obi concluded: “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

BREAKING: Mystery Deepens as Fresh Details Emerge in Mary Habila’s Death at Tinubu Minister’s House
The Ebonyi State Ministry of Justice has recommended that a post-mortem examination be conducted to determine the cause of death of 26-year-old Mary Habila, who was found dead at the Uburu residence of the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
The recommendation was contained in a legal advice dated July 15, 2026, and addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ebonyi State Police Command.Radio
According to the document, reportedly obtained by SaharaReporters, the advice followed a police investigation into Habila’s death at the minister’s residence on June 27.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) stated that the evidence contained in the police case file was insufficient to establish the cause of her death.
The legal advice noted that Habila was found alone and unresponsive in her apartment, adding that investigators were unable to determine what led to her death based on the available evidence.
According to the DPP, there was nothing in the investigation to suggest that Habila had any known illness or underlying health condition before her sudden death.
“There was no evidence that the deceased was indisposed, sick or unstable health-wise prior to her sudden death, as she was full of life at the time she returned to Uburu in company of her team,” the document stated.
The ministry argued that, in the absence of any known medical condition, a scientific examination was necessary to establish the actual cause of death.
“From the foregoing, therefore, the question that would readily come to mind is what exactly caused the deceased’s sudden death?” the DPP queried.
It maintained that a post-mortem examination remained the most appropriate means of providing investigators with a clear direction.
“This curiosity under the law can only be resolved through a post-mortem examination, so as to provide a clue to the police as to the direction of their investigation,” the legal advice added.
The Ministry of Justice further stated that the police could either honour the family’s reported wish to proceed with burial without an autopsy or exercise their statutory powers to order the examination.
“It is therefore the view of this office that the police invoke their discretionary power to either respect the request of the deceased’s family or proceed with the post-mortem examination,” the DPP stated.
The recommendation comes amid growing public interest and conflicting reports over the release of Habila’s body for burial.
Her father, Baba Habila, reportedly visited a morgue in Ebonyi State to receive her remains ahead of a planned burial in Nok, Kaduna State, but declined to comment to journalists.
The family was also reported to have indicated that it did not intend to request an autopsy.
However, Habila’s body had reportedly not been released as investigators continued to consider the Ministry of Justice’s recommendation.
According to reports, Habila arrived at Umahi’s residence on June 26 alongside another woman identified as Anita Baski and was found unresponsive the following morning.
The case was initially reported at the Ohaozara Divisional Police Headquarters before it was transferred to the Ebonyi State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
Minister of Works David Umahi later confirmed that Habila died at his residence, describing her as a physiotherapist seconded from the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences to the Federal Ministry of Works.
Umahi also disclosed that he had encouraged the family to consent to an autopsy to establish the cause of death.
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters, citing unnamed police sources, reported that investigators were examining aspects of Habila’s employment history and her relationship with the university and the Federal Ministry of Works.

“Irreparable Loss”: Tears as Prominent APC Chieftain Dies
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, and the Ekiti Council of Elders have expressed grief over the death of renowned community leader and All Progressives Congress chieftain, Prince Gabriel Omodara, popularly known as “Baba QC.”
Omodara, a member of the Ekiti Council of Elders and former chairman of the defunct Ekiti Central Local Government, died in the early hours of Sunday at the age of 93.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, Oyebanji described the late nonagenarian as a committed progressive whose contributions to politics and community development left an enduring legacy.
The governor said Omodara’s death was a huge loss to the APC, the progressive family, Ado Ekiti and the state as a whole.
“Pa Omodara was one of the most dedicated leaders of the party, who worked tirelessly with other stakeholders to build a strong and enduring political structure for the APC in the state,” he said.
Oyebanji also described the deceased as a man of integrity, wisdom and selfless service whose counsel would be greatly missed.
He praised Omodara’s contributions to the development of Ado Ekiti and Ekiti State, particularly during his tenure as chairman of the then Ekiti Central Local Government, which comprised Ado and Ifelodun/Ifaki Local Government Areas.
According to the governor, the late elder statesman devoted his later years to community service and mentoring younger leaders.
Recalling his last meeting with Omodara, Oyebanji said the deceased showed no signs of ill health and had continued to demonstrate his passion for the progress of the state.
“Pa Omodara lived a fulfilled life, served selflessly, and left behind a legacy of honour, integrity, and enduring impact,” the governor said.
He urged the family to take solace in the exemplary life and lasting legacies of the deceased.
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Ekiti State, I commiserate with the immediate family of our departed leader, Pa Omodara, the APC and progressive family in Ekiti, and the people of Ado Ekiti. We pray that God grants Baba eternal rest and gives the family the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he added.
Also mourning the late politician, the General Secretary of the Ekiti Council of Elders, Elder Niyi Ajibulu, described Omodara as a respected community leader and stabilising force within the council.
“Prince Omodara (also fondly known as Worowo) was the face of the Council for the workshop ‘Aging Grace’,” Ajibulu said.
He added, “A notable stabilising personnel in the Council. Always blending the Christian religion with the Yoruba tradition in prayers and activities.
“A great, respected community and political leader in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State and Nigeria.
“He was a well-known grassroots mobilizer in the region, recognised for his longstanding political and community engagement. We will miss him greatly.”
Omodara was widely regarded as one of the leading political figures in Ekiti and played active roles in grassroots mobilisation and community development over several decades.

Somalia–Sudan Axis: Alleged Saudi Support Through Mercenaries and Weapons
Recent media and military reporting has drawn attention to what appears to be a shared pattern of militarisation and arms transfers in Somalia and Sudan. The common denominator, according to coverage, is Saudi involvement through financing, weapons deliveries, and the deployment of foreign personnel in both states.
PM News traces this linkage in its latest analysis.
In Somalia, the focus has been on activity in Galmudug State. PM News reports that a Saudi military delegation visited two training camps in the Guri Jabal area of Galguduud region last June, where Riyadh is said to be funding a broader training programme.
Separate local accounts allege that Saudi Arabia recruited mercenaries from Romania, Ukraine, South Africa, and Colombia through unofficial channels. The stated purpose was to train forces aligned with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, at a time when his administration faces mounting domestic opposition.
Officials say 5,107 Somali soldiers are currently in training, including 2,000 recruits drawn from Somalia’s Northeastern State. The programme is set to last nine months. What has raised concern is the suggestion that some of the foreign trainers may later be moved to Sudan to support the Sudanese army and allied groups.
Tensions in Somalia spiked in the first week of June after clashes between federal forces and armed factions opposed to an extension of President Mohamud’s term. His constitutional mandate expired in May. Meanwhile, militant groups including Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS remain active across several regions.
According to PM News, Africa Intelligence reported in February that Sudanese officers led a covert mission to train Somali militias. The report said “a team of Sudanese military personnel trained 1,000 Somali recruits in Galmudug State” under the oversight of intelligence structures linked to the presidency.
In Sudan, the allegations mirror those in Somalia. Gulf Post, citing Intelligence Online, said imagery and intelligence gathered in Kyiv indicated the use of howitzers on Sudanese battlefields after Saudi Arabia delivered the systems between 2023 and 2024.
Intelligence Online also stated that Ukrainian mercenaries trained artillery units of the Sudanese Armed Forces under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and allied Islamist elements on how to operate the equipment.
The same outlet reported that Saudi Arabia shipped three batteries of 155mm M777 artillery systems, plus large stockpiles of ammunition, to the Sudanese army during 2023 and 2024. Evidence from 2023 allegedly shows Ukrainian fighters operating towed M777s in terrain consistent with Sudan, based on architectural and vegetation markers. The documents are described as the first direct evidence tying Saudi-supplied systems to operations in Sudan.
The overlap has drawn regional attention. SudanLeaks quoted Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed making remarks that echo international assessments about the Sudanese army and its allied militias using foreign fighters and mercenaries from several African countries.
According to SudanLeaks, Abiy’s comments align with reports that Muslim Brotherhood-linked militias in Sudan, including the Al-Baraa ibn Malik Battalion which is affiliated with the Islamic Movement and under U.S. sanctions, have stepped up recruitment of mercenaries from Ethiopia and other African states. The group is also said to be using Iranian and Ukrainian personnel.
