An atmosphere of grief and solemn reflection surrounded the burial of renowned Muslim cleric, Sheikh Surajudeen Akanni Asukuna, as family members, religious leaders, associates and thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects.

The respected Islamic scholar was laid to rest at the Mowe-Ofada Muslim Cemetery in Ogun State, where funeral prayers were conducted in accordance with Islamic rites. The burial drew worshippers, students and well-wishers from different parts of the country, many of whom described the late cleric as a devoted teacher whose sermons and guidance touched countless lives.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared Tuesday, July 28, 2026, a public holiday to enable civil servants and other public workers to collect their Permanent Voter’s Cards, PVCs.

The governor, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday, said the work-free day is to allow public servants to participate in the electoral process by picking up their PVC before the closure of the exercise.

The directive, which was conveyed in a circular across the public service, said the work-free day approval was to enable public servants to perform their civic obligation during the forthcoming gubernatorial and future elections in the state.

According to the circular, those on essential duties, like medical workers, security staff, etc., are, however, advised to make necessary arrangements among themselves in this regard so as not to have negative consequences on the lives of the citizenry.

Governor Adeleke urges public servants and other informal workers to collect their voter cards as urgently as possible, reminding the public of how critical next month’s election is to the state and her future.

“I encourage all registered voters to reach all the collection points without delay. Your vote is your power. Your voter’s card is your licence to the ballot paper and, by extension, to the ballot box,” the statement added.
