Badagry Residents Receive Free Prostate Cancer Screening

The medical outreach team and some of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) pose for a photograph during the prostate cancer awareness and screening in Badagry.

Covenant Applied Informatics and Communication, Africa Centre of Excellence (CAPIC-ACE), in partnership with Covenant University Community Development Impact Initiatives Committee (CU-CIIDC), the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Badagry Zone and Beulah World Initiative (BWI) at the weekend conducted free Prostate Cancer awareness and screening for farmers in the zone.

The medical outreach team cautioned that farmers and men, especially those within the age of 40 and beyond, are at risk of prostate cancer.

Against this backdrop, they urged men to go for medical checkups regularly to guide against prostate cancer and other related medical conditions as it is on the rise and the health of farmers, considering their role in the nation’s development, needs to be prioritised.

This admonition was handed by Covenant University Ota, Ogun State, during the institution’s Prostate Cancer awareness and free screening programme held over the weekend at the Badagry Local Government.

The activity saw over 200 participants undergo free tests, health talks on prostate cancer, enlightenment on general wellness, and medical advice, among others.

Addressing participants during a health talk session, Head CU Medical Centre, Dr Ademola Adebanjo, who identified symptoms of prostate cancer in men, said there is the possibility that some of them may have been experiencing similar symptoms, but applying different medications; hence the need to stop such an approach.

He said: “Prostate cancer is on the rise, and the symptoms are simple – urinary problems like going to the toilet often; getting to the bathroom but not being able to urinate; urinating but stopping midway; being unable to hold urine; or blood in the urine and all of that.

He said many of these symptoms happen to men, but unfortunately, many ignorantly use the wrong medications, saying such a scenario is akin to using the drugs for leprosy to treat malaria.

“Regrettably, many of them would probably have gone too far (in using wrong medications) and before they realised what was happening, the situation may have been prostate cancer that is now too advanced. That is why we are educating you all on the need to go for checks whenever you suspect you experience any of those symptoms.”

Adebanjo who described prostate cancer as the second deadliest for men after lung cancer, added that black men are more vulnerable to its infection than their white counterparts.

To guard against prostate cancer, he advised men to have plenty of sleep, maintain a healthy diet, avoid fatty food, exercise regularly, and stay off excessive alcohol consumption.

Similarly, the leader of CApiC-ACE, Prof Emeka Iweala, noted that the exercise forms a part of the six-year-old centre, geared towards fulfilling one of her core mandates of community engagement.

“We have done so many outreaches, but this is our first time in Badagry,” he continued, “One interesting thing about this outreach is that we are doing it for a specified population, which is farmers.

“We know how critical the role of farmers is to the nation. If the farmers are healthy, then we can rest assured of a regular food supply.”

Further, Iweala said, aside from admonishing farmers to know their status, the initiative is also to allay their fears that prostate cancer is tantamount to a death sentence.

“We are conducting free screening and tests for prostate cancer so that members of the community can know their status. Once they know their status, they know what to do next. Those who are negative only need to know how to prevent them, while those who are positive are enlightened on how to manage them.”

Going down memory lane, Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Badagry chapter, Alhaji Oyelekan Muftau Abiodun, recalled how he crossed paths with CAPI-ACE through one of their members.

He explained how he was buoyed into approaching them for collaborations because many of their members are ageing, and therefore needed the screening.

“This enlightenment is like an eye-opener for us,” Oyelekan stressed while underscoring the merits of the exercise.

“Just imagine when you are ignorant of something and here you have experts who are now shedding light on it. It’s not just about the empowerment, entertainment and the hospitality aspect, but the real message embedded in prostate cancer.”

Two of the beneficiaries, Olaleetan Elisha and Haruna Asegun, are happy that if anything, the talk allayed their fears of prostate cancer.

“I’ve heard about it (prostate cancer) before,” said Elisha, 59.

“Even though I have not experienced any of the symptoms mentioned during the health talk, I have always been reluctant to go for the test because of the fear of testing positive. But today, my fear was allayed. I now know that even if prostate cancer is detected early, it can still be treated.”

On his part, Asegun 52, hopes the marriage between the farmers and CU would continue as the latter constantly needs such education to stay healthy and be more productive.

Meanwhile, one of the partners of the outreach programme, Beulah World Initiative (BWI), expressed how glad they were to collaborate with CU since their mandates aligned.

Founder/Coordinator of BWI Ms. Chichi Ononiwu, outlines the tasks of the initiative.

“Our organisation pushes primary healthcare across rural communities in Nigeria. We have had over 120 outreaches in rural communities so far. We normally treat people, and conduct varying tests like blood, HIV/STD, genotype, eye, blood sugar and malaria. We also give out free drugs, eyeglasses, as well as free food to the elderly within the 65 and upward age bracket,” she said.

Ononiwu also identified some challenges ahead of the event.

“The test has been done and blood samples collected. We are going to give them their results in a few days. We will not stop here. We continue the free enlightenment for as many as require our assistance,” she concluded.

Suspected kidnappers have abducted the traditional ruler of Odo-Oriya community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Adeniyi Adelana, during an attack on his palace, as reported by Naija News.

The 60-year-old monarch was reportedly whisked away on Saturday night when armed men stormed his residence and dragged him into a nearby bush.

The attack also left his wife injured after she was shot in the right hand by the assailants.

According to Naija News, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh.

According to the police, the incident occurred at about 8:05 p.m. when approximately six armed men invaded the monarch’s residence under the cover of darkness.

“Preliminary reports indicate that at about 8:05 p.m. on the reported date, a group of approximately six armed men stormed the residence of Mr. Adeniyi Adelana, aged 60, the Baale of Ode Oriya Village,” the statement read.

“The assailants reportedly invaded the premises under the cover of darkness and forcefully whisked the victim away through a nearby bush path to an unknown destination.”

Jimoh said the monarch’s wife sustained a gunshot wound during the attack but was rescued and rushed to a medical facility for treatment.

“In the course of the attack, the victim’s wife sustained a gunshot injury to her right hand. She was promptly rescued and taken to a nearby medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment and responding positively to medical care,” he added.

The command said security operatives had commenced a comprehensive search-and-rescue operation aimed at securing the safe release of the traditional ruler.

Following the distress report, the Divisional Police Officer of B Division, Owo, was said to have mobilised a joint team of police personnel and other security operatives to the scene.

“Upon receipt of the distress report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of B Division, Owo, immediately mobilized a combined team of police operatives and other security personnel to the scene,” the statement said.

“A comprehensive search-and-rescue operation was immediately activated, with security operatives combing nearby forests, bush paths, and suspected escape routes in a determined effort to track the movement of the kidnappers, secure the victim’s safe release, and bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The police added that tactical deployments had been reinforced in the area and neighbouring communities to improve security and support ongoing operations.

The Commissioner of Police in the state was said to have directed all tactical units, intelligence assets and operational teams to intensify efforts to rescue the monarch and arrest those behind the abduction.

According to the command, the police remain committed to ensuring the victim is reunited with his family while those responsible face prosecution.

The command also urged residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities, while encouraging them to provide credible information that could aid the rescue effort.

The abduction is the latest in a series of violent attacks and kidnappings that have heightened concerns among residents across Ondo State.

Earlier this month, gunmen reportedly invaded Igbosi Community in Idogun, Ose Local Government Area, injuring several residents, destroying properties and abducting a nine-year-old boy identified as Oluwatobi, the son of a pastor.

In March, armed men allegedly stormed a government-owned primary health centre in the Oke Ijebu area of Akure and abducted at least six health workers during a midnight operation.

The same month, kidnappers reportedly abducted a council official and another resident in Akure North Local Government Area and demanded ransom for their release.

A health worker was also reportedly shot dead in Akure while his son was abducted, while another couple was kidnapped in Ilu-Abo community in Akure North in February.

President Bola Tinubu has joined Nigerians and the Armed Forces in mourning the death of former Defence spokesperson, Major General Abubakar Rabe, who died in terrorist captivity.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed shock over the late general’s death.

Describing General Rabe as an officer with a distinguished military career, the President commiserated with his family, particularly his wife, who remains in the captors’ custody.

Tinubu also extended condolences to the Katsina State Government and the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“While the terrorists have done their worst, the government will never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies,” the President said.

Reiterating his stance on June 12, Tinubu warned, “Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State.

“These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” Tinubu said.

While reassuring Nigerians that the enemies of the nation would soon become history, the President urged citizens to remain united.

“General Abubakar’s death should further serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents.

“We must never negotiate with them on any terms, but continue to treat them as the greatest enemies of our dear nation who should never be spared,” Tinubu stated.

Gov Makinde Releases Fresh Updates on Kidnapped Oyo Schoolchildren

Published

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has provided an update regarding the schoolchildren and teachers who were abducted by suspected bandits in the Oriire Local Government Area.

He confirmed that the victims are still being held within the Old Oyo National Park region as security agencies continue their efforts to secure their release.

In his Newsletter No. 140, released on Friday, Governor Makinde reassured residents that the rescue operation is ongoing and emphasized that authorities remain committed to finding the victims.

He noted that it has been 27 days since the coordinated attacks on schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities, which has caused significant distress for many families.

The abductions occurred during attacks on the Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Ahoro-Esinle on May 15. Acknowledging the pain and anxiety experienced by parents and relatives of the abductees, Makinde recognized that the prolonged wait has been difficult.

Makinde expressed understanding of the concerns within the affected communities, indicating that assurances from the government may not alleviate the worries of families awaiting the safe return of their loved ones.

The governor, however, maintained that security agencies are working round the clock to bring the victims home safely.

“Every credible lead is being pursued and every lawful measure is being deployed to secure the safe release of the abductees,” he said.

He explained that intelligence available to the government indicates that the victims are still within the wider Old Oyo National Park corridor.

Makinde noted that the vast forest, which stretches across about 2,500 square kilometres and cuts across several local government areas, has created major operational challenges for security personnel.

According to him, the difficult terrain requires careful planning, strategic coordination and patience to avoid putting the lives of the captives at further risk.

The governor also appealed to residents to remain alert and report suspicious movements to security authorities through the state’s toll-free emergency line, stressing that useful information from members of the public could assist ongoing operations.
