Man City Take Advantage Of Arsenal Slump, Cut Gap To Two Points
Aston Villa ended Arsenal’s 18-match unbeaten run to blow the Premier League title race wide open on Saturday as Manchester City beat Sunderland 3-0 to close within two points of the leaders.
Emiliano Buendia’s stoppage time strike secured a 2-1 victory for Villa and a ninth win in 10 league games since taking just three points from their opening five matches of the season.
“We were pushing and we were really, really believing in our victory,” said Villa boss Unai Emery. “We pushed until the last minute, and we got it.”
Arsenal were without the injured Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba and Cristhian Mosquera in defence and the normally rock solid visitors struggled to cope with Villa’s variety of attacking weapons.
Eberechi Eze was caught on his heels as Matty Cash blasted Emery’s men into a half-time lead.
Arteta responded by introducing Viktor Gyokeres and Leandro Trossard at the break and got the response he demanded.
Trossard equalised with his 50th Premier League goal, from Bukayo Saka’s deflected cross.

Only a stunning save from Emi Martinez against his former club then denied Martin Odegaard giving Arsenal the lead.
But Arsenal’s quest to end a 22-year wait to win the title hit a rare bump in the road this season when Buendia fired into the top corner after a goalmouth scramble in the final minute of added time.
“Losing it in the manner that we did in the last kick of the game was very painful and disappointing,” said Arteta.
“It is a good test as well for us. We’ve been 18 games unbeaten, performing and winning almost every game and now we have to hit that one. Now we have to go again and every three days we have a game, so I’m sure we’ll be ready.”

JFA President Tashima Ready To Challenge Infantino For FIFA Presidency
Kozo Tashima, Honorary President of the Japan Football Association (JFA), announced on Thursday that he will run for the FIFA presidency in next March’s election, setting up a high-profile challenge against incumbent Gianni Infantino.
Tashima told Japanese newspaper Sports Nippon that his decision comes with the full backing of his national association as he seeks to champion integrity at world football’s governing body.
“I am grateful that I can make this announcement with the full support of the JFA,” Tashima said.
“It’s not about winning or losing, but about conveying to the world the honest, sound, and upright attitude that Japanese football has built.
“What FIFA needs now are these values that we have protected. I have decided to run to make this appeal to the world.”
Infantino, who is seeking re-election, has faced mounting opposition following a controversial attempt in July to bring private investors into a new FIFA commercial entity designed to hold rights to flagship competitions, including the World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement From International Football
Legendary Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from international football.
The 41-year-old Portugal legend has brought an end to his glittering 23-year career for his country after a record-breaking 146 goals in 234 caps.
Ronaldo took to social media to confirm the decision on Thursday morning, with the caption “Portugal will always be in me.”
“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the number seven shirt to the national team. I never felt it belonged to me alone. But, for 23 years, I had the privilege and the responsibility of wearing it, defending it and carrying it with me into stadiums all over the world.
“Today, the time has come to carry it into the future. It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the mind alone. They are also made with the heart. A journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever has come to an end.
“When I look back at everything I experienced with the national team, I don’t just see matches, goals, records or trophies. I see people. I see Portuguese people living abroad who, for ninety minutes, felt a little closer to home. I see millions of Portuguese people I have never met, but who became part of my life. Because, at the end of the day, football is so much bigger than a game. Football is about people.
“Throughout my career with the national team, I always pushed myself beyond my limits. I wanted to win. I wanted to be better. I wanted to make history. I always demanded the most of myself. I always wanted more. I always believed we could go further. And I gave everything I had for this shirt.

“There were perfect afternoons and nights. There were victories I will never forget. There were defeats that still hurt to remember. I made mistakes. I suffered. There were also moments when I couldn’t give the Portuguese people what they so desperately wanted. But I never gave up. And above all, I never stopped feeling proud. To represent Portugal.
“Over the years, I learned a few very simple things. Goals fade. Trophies end up in museums. Records are eventually broken. But, there is something time can never erase: the place we hold in people’s hearts. If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you embrace someone, forget a worry, or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it.
“Because being Portuguese is also about this. We suffer together, we rise together. We believe again.
“Portugal will always need young people who dare to dream. Players who never give up. New generations to believe it is possible to go where no one has ever gone before. Because a country that keeps creating new heroes is a country that never stops believing in itself.
“To my teammates, I want to say something special. Thank you for every run, for every embrace, for every argument. For every silence before stepping onto the pitch. For every victory we celebrated together. For every defeat that made us stronger. I had the privilege of being your captain, but no captain walks alone. And you will always be a part of my story.
“To all the coaches, directors, doctors, physiotherapists, kit managers, staff members, and so many others who worked alongside me throughout these years, thank you. Many of you never appeared in the photographs. But without you, none of those photographs would have been possible.
“To my family. Thank you for sharing this dream with me. Thank you for understanding the absences, the sacrifices and the moments when the national team had to take up space in my life that also belonged to you. If I came this far, it was because we always walked hand in hand.”
Ronaldo won Euro 2016 with his country, as well as two Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. Portugal exited the most recent World Cup in the round of 16, beaten by eventual champions Spain.
Having made his international debut in 2003, Ronaldo played in 12 major tournaments: six World Cups and six European Championships.

Adegbuyi Named WAFU-B Player Of Tournament As Edo Queens Qualify For Champions League
Sixteen-year-old Oluwakemi Adegbuyi has been named Player of the Tournament after helping Edo Queens win the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s title and qualify for the 2026/27 CAF Women’s Champions League.
The Nigerian champions defeated Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa 4-1 on penalties after the final ended 2-2 in regulation time in Burkina Faso on Sunday.
Edo Queens looked set to suffer defeat after conceding an early penalty, but they refused to give up and found a late equaliser in the 90+3rd minute to force the game into a shootout.
They held their nerve from the spot, converting four penalties while Ampem Darkoa managed just one to claim the WAFU-B crown and secure their place in the Champions League.
Adegbuyi was one of the standout performers throughout the competition.
The Nigeria U-17 international scored twice in Edo Queens’ 3-1 win over ASEC Mimosas, finding the net on her debut before scoring again in her second appearance.
Her impressive displays earned her the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player.

The teenager also enjoyed a remarkable 2025/26 season with FC Robo Queens, scoring 11 goals during the NWFL Premiership regular season and Super Six playoffs. Her form earned her the NWFL Premiership Player of the Season award.
Adegbuyi has now added the WAFU-B Player of the Tournament prize to her growing collection of individual honours and will be among the players to watch at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco from October 17 to November 7.
Meanwhile, Edo State Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa described Edo Queens’ qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League as a remarkable achievement for the state and Nigerian women’s football.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Friday Aghedo, in Benin, Idahosa praised the players and technical crew for their resilience, discipline and determination.
“The feat is a remarkable achievement that has further placed Edo State at the forefront of women’s football in Nigeria and West Africa,” he said.
Idahosa also commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his administration’s investment in sports development and praised Edo State Sports Commission chairman Amadin Enabulele for his leadership and support.
“I congratulate the players, coaches, technical crew, officials and the entire Edo Queens family on this well-deserved qualification,” Idahosa said.
“You have made Edo State and Nigeria proud. Your victory is a testament to what can be achieved when talent is matched with discipline, commitment and the right investment.
“We are proud of you and look forward to seeing you make an even greater mark on the continental stage.”
