Osimhen’s 7 Sins To Napoli: Reasons Italian Club Want To Ruin Super Eagles Star’s Career

Published

on

The story of Victor Osimhen and Napoli is a tragedy of two lovers whose flame of passion has dulled into contempt for each other. One summer, they were parading the petal-strewn streets of Naples arm-in-arm, cuddling the Scudetto to the cheers of millions of fans intoxicated by their fairy-tale love story.

A year later, they are back on the same streets but with shrapnel of their battered love littering the ground. Silence replaces the noise from crazed fans as both parties bid farewell after weeks of emotional blackmail and brutal brinksmanship.

It appeared Osimhen was born to play for Napoli. His story mirrored that of the club: a vessel of enormous passion and fury destined for great achievement, which once fell on tough times, and was on the rise to conquer all that was predestined.

Osimhen was predicted to lead the new generation of African football talents after he won the Golden Boot at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. But a couple of regretful transfer moves derailed his rise until he joined Lille.

Napoli was one of the corridors through which the world saw Diego Maradona’s greatness when he led the club to two Scudetto titles in 1987 and 1990. The club then fell on hard times and struggled against the big boys of Serie A. Over the following decade, Napoli repeatedly aimed for the big prize but missed.

At this juncture, Osimhen and Napoli blended their struggles into one for €70 million. They piggybacked each other to tick off elusive goals: Napoli won the Serie A for the first time in 33 years, and Osimhen finished as the league’s top scorer and was named the eighth-best player in the world.

Here are seven sin the Nigerian might have committed that triggered many delays in his move away from Napoli:

1. FALL OUT WITH RUDI GARCIA
After Napoli won the Serie A title in the 2022/23 season, Luciano Spalleti left the club to lead the Italian national team.
Rudi Garcia was appointed the new coach, but the French manager had a mixed start. There were also reports of rancour in the dressing room.

The discord became public when Napoli played Bologna in the Serie A in September 2023. Osimhen lost a penalty kick and was substituted by the coach in the 86th minute. The striker reacted angrily to the substitution and yelled at Garcia over the decision.

The game ended goalless, and Osimhen’s attitude was reflected in much of the conversation in the Italian media.

2. MOCKERY VIDEO ON NAPOLI’S TIKTOK
Another controversial incident occurred in the wake of the touchline row with Garcia.
A video that appeared to be mocking Osimhen was uploaded on Napoli’s official TikTok page.

In the clip, a sped-up version of the striker’s penalty miss against Bologna was mashed with high-pitch baby audio sound.

Several football lovers condemned Napoli for uploading the video.
In reaction to the footage, Roberto Calenda, Osimhen’s agent, threatened legal action against Napoli.
Consequently, Osimhen also deleted all posts about Napoli from his Instagram page.

3. EXTENDED NEGOTIATION TO RENEW CONTRACT WITH NAPOLI
Amid all the controversy, Osimhen was yet to extend his contract with the club. The clock was ticking desperately for the club as the player only had one year left on his contract.

Aurelio De Laurentiis, Napoli owner, was keen on committing Osimhen to more years at the club to hold leverage over the striker’s admirers across Europe and beyond.

In October 2023, Napoli, in a statement, accused Osimhen of changing his mind after verbally agreeing to sign a new deal.

The repressed animosity between the two parties was not quelled until December 2023, when Osimhen penned a new deal.
The new deal reportedly doubled his salary to €10 million a season, with a release clause of around €130 million.
However, the negotiating gimmicks left an uneasy crack in the relationship between both parties.

4. OUTBURST AGAINST KVARATSKHELIA’S AGENT
In January 2024, Mamuka Jugeli, agent to Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, a teammate of Osimhen at Napoli, accused the Nigerian of a “lack of ambition”.
The agent insinuated that Osimhen is solely driven by money and the striker will soon move to Saudi Arabia — adding that his client is focused on top European clubs.
The comment elicited an angry response from Osimhen, who posted an expletive-laden post berating the Georgian agent on his Instagram page.
He described the agent as “a piece of filth and a disgrace” and lambasted his “sense of reasoning”.

5. TRANSFER REQUEST AND CONTE’S COMMENTS
Despite an injury-hindered season, Osimhen finished the season with 17 goals in all competitions for Napoli. The club failed to defend the Scudetto and were 10th in the league at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Osimhen handed over a transfer request to the club as the summer transfer window opened.
Shortly after, Napoli appointed Antonio Conte as manager, and the Italian repeatedly said that Osimhen would not be part of his plans for the season.
The club looked for a replacement for Osimhen and eventually signed Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

6. CHELSEA AND AL AHLI DEALS
Chelsea were among the foremost admirers of Osimhen, and the London club looked keen to sign the striker this summer.

However, both parties failed to see the move through due to disagreement over Osimhen’s wage demand.
The Blues reportedly offered the striker a €4m initial annual salary, a fraction of what he earns at Napoli.
Al Ahli were also interested in getting Osimhen into the Saudi Pro League.
Napoli had initially accepted a £67.3 million (€80m) offer from the Arabian club for the striker, who would have earned £33.6 million (€40m) a season.
But the Italian club reportedly demanded another €5 million added to the deal, prompting Al Ahli to look elsewhere and sign Ivan Tooney from Brentford.

7. NAPOLI EXCLUDE OSIMHEN FROM THE SERIE A SQUAD

Following the collapse of the potential transfer deals, Napoli axed Osimhen from its first team.
He was not registered for the 2022/25 Serie A season, and his jersey number was initially administered to Lukaku.

Messi Set To Return For Argentina Against Iceland

Published

on

Lionel Messi is set to return to action for Argentina in their final warm-up match ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with head coach Lionel Scaloni confirming that the captain will feature against Iceland on Tuesday in Auburn, Alabama.

Messi missed Argentina’s 2-0 friendly victory over Honduras on June 6 despite taking part in the pre-match warm-up, as he continued his recovery from muscle fatigue in his left hamstring. The Inter Miami forward joined the national team camp after experiencing discomfort during his club’s MLS fixture against the Philadelphia Union before the league paused for the World Cup.

“Messi will play, I just don’t know how many minutes,” Scaloni said in a news conference, according to ESPN. “I still need to talk to him in today’s training, and we will see how many minutes he plays to avoid any type of risks. We will decide, but in principle he will play.”

The Argentina coach added that the squad’s minutes would be monitored closely as the reigning world champions prepare for their title defence.

“We’re going to distribute the minutes of the players who will play tomorrow to try to avoid any mishaps,” said the World Cup-winning coach.
Scaloni also confirmed that Nico Paz, Nahuel Molina and Gonzalo Montiel are available for selection after recovering from injuries that had forced them to train separately in recent days.

Ivory Coast Send World Cup Warning

Published

on

Ahead of the competition, Africa Cup of Nations finalists/winners Morocco and Senegal are — understandably — being tipped as the continent’s contenders most likely to make a deep run in the competition.

But expectations for the West African giants may need to be revived after their bold come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the 2018 champions in Nantes.

Historically significant win

Even though this was a friendly, there was a historical significance behind the Ivory Coast’s victory. In just under 30 matches against African opponents, this was only the fifth time — in competitive or non-competitive fixtures — that France have ever been defeated.

Beginning with Senegal at the 2002 World Cup, they subsequently lost against both South Africa and Tunisia at the 2010 and 2022 tournaments respectively, while also falling against Nigeria in a 2009 friendly.

Victories by African teams over the two-time world champions have been relatively few and far between, while never before in three previous attempts have the Elephants got one over on the European giants.

Their performance on Thursday should give Senegal encouragement that the Teranga Lions can also get their Group I campaign off to a positive start when they face Didier Deschamps’ side at the MetLife Stadium on June 16.

…but this was not the ‘real’ France

While the Ivorians (and Senegal) will be massively encouraged by Thursday’s 2-1 triumph, they ought not lose sight of the fact that this was far from the full-strength France team that the Teranga Lions can expect in East Rutherford in 11 days’ time.

France were without William Saliba due to a back injury, while Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League winning duo Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué did not feature.

Deschamps also made a swathe of changes both at half-time — when France were leading — and after 66 minutes, before Amad Diallo’s 84th-minute winner.

This left the hosts both weakened and disjointed, opening the door for an Ivorian shock, although the Elephants — also without key players and undertaking a raft of second-half substitutes — still deserve immense credit for a superb comeback.

One Doue vs the other

While Desire Doue became a European champion with PSG at the weekend, it was his older brother Guela who stole the plaudits on Thursday.

The rightback equalised for the Ivorians in the 53rd minute when he capitalised on some confused French defending — and another lapse by Ibrahima Konaté — to cap off a fine Ivorian team move and sweep home past Mike Maignan.

Strasbourg’s Doue, who was born in France, sang both countries’ national anthems before the match, before celebrating his goal by kicking the corner flag – emblazoned with the French Football Federation logo.

There was still time for a fond embrace between the two brothers at the final whistle, although it’s Guela who departs the hero as both embark on their respective World Cup campaigns.

“The coach gives me a lot of liberty,” Guela told NCI Television, “and that allows me to have a lot of fun on the pitch, connect with the players who are ahead of me, and I was able to bring a lot to the team today.

“It’s a shame I didn’t get to play against [my brother], as this was our first France-Ivory Coast match, but I’m happy, and he isn’t too fed up.”

Fofana catches the eye in goal

Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Fae will have been delighted to have seen his goalkeeper Yahia Fofana in such sharp form against France, with the stopper making several key saves to keep the West Africans in touching distance of their opponents.

He could do little to deny Rayan Cherki his magical opener, but the keeper made five saves, and impressed with his leadership, communication and stature in the backline.

Given that the Elephants were without first-choice centreback pairing Odilon Kossounou and Ousmane Diomande (at least until the last 15 minutes), they can be confident that their defensive authority will improve further still before their Group E fixtures against Ecuador, Germany and Curacao.

Nicolas Pépé proves his worth

Despite being overlooked for the Africa Cup of Nations, Villarreal wideman Nicolas Pepê has done enough to force his way back into contention for the World Cup, and followed up his goalscoring display against Scotland in March with another fine showing here.

The former Lille and Arsenal wideman had a hand in 16 goals in 36 La Liga outings this season, and has survived Fae’s cull of more experienced attackers which has cost the likes of Sébastien Haller, Jérémie Boga and Wilfried Zaha their World Cup places.

Pepe is the only attacker in t

Attacking options galore!

All in all, the Ivory Coast can of course feel very pleased with themselves after Thursday’s display, and a victory that should reinforce the brooding belief within the squad that they can make an impact at the World Cup.

Certainly, this crop of players, many of whom were part of the side that won the AFCON on home soil in 2024, should become the first Ivory Coast side ever to reach the knockout stages, succeeding where the Golden Generation failed on three occasions between 2006 and 2014.

Fae’s side have a balanced and imposing defensive unit, an experienced and grizzled midfield – with captain Franck Kessié having returned from injury, while the world may well be sleeping on their elite attacking options.

As well as Pepe, Fae can call upon match-winner Diallo, new call-up Elye Wahi, RB Leipzig and rumoured Paris Saint-Germain target Yan Diomande, as well as wonderkids Ange-Yoan Bonny and Bazoumana Touré among others.

It’s a veritable feast of attacking options, and Fae’s challenge isn’t to find where the offensive threat will come from, but how he packs as many of these forwards into his side without losing the team’s balance and structure.

he squad over the age of 24, and he appears primed to step into a key role after reaffirming his quality again on Thursday.

The attacker showed off his attacking intelligence, technique, speed and agility, while his interplay down the right with Doue should represent a key asset for the Elephants at the World Cup.
