Tinubu’s Crises, Wike’s Dilemma

Published

on

Every week, President Tinubu faces a new problem. His Tinubu administration seems to be walking from one crisis to another every now and then.  Is it negligence, incompetence, or just bad luck? While security challenges are surging, the US is breathing down on him. At the moment, he’s dealing with a serious diplomatic spat with Burkina Faso.

Eleven Nigerian military personnel are being detained in that country, days after the plane in which they were travelling made an “unauthorised” landing in the south-west city of Bobo Dioulasso. The problem started on Monday when a Nigerian military cargo plane, a C-130, travelling from Lagos to Portugal, was forced to land in Burkina Faso.

Burkinabe authorities described the landing as an ‘’unfriendly act carried out in defiance of international law’’ in a statement that evening. But the Nigerian air force said technical problems had forced the plane to divert to the nearest airport “in line with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols.”

That the landing came within 24 hours of Nigerian troops helping to thwart a coup attempt in Benin, which borders Nigeria and Burkina Faso, was enough to frighten the junta in Ouagadougou and spur torrents of conspiracy theories.  Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger officially broke away from the ECOWAS regional bloc in January, forming a military alliance. They now belong to a new bloc known as the Alliance of Sahel States.

As ECOWAS Chairman in 2023, President Tinubu had, in a moment of indiscretion, threatened to use military forces from ECOWAS countries to invade the three countries, remove their military leaders and reinstate the deposed democratically elected civilian governments.

The threats created panic in the subregion, frightened the new military regimes and forced them to break away from ECOWAS. It was Tinubu’s first diplomatic crisis since he assumed office as Nigerian leader. Many more were to come. There have been reports of severe underfunding in foreign missions, negative impacts of the non-availability of ambassadors, the president’s frequent travels and managing Nigeria’s reputation amid mounting economic and security problems.

The President’s firm stand against the military juntas in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso was met with a less cohesive West African response, weakening ECOWAS and challenging Nigeria’s traditional leadership role in the subregion.

With the detention of the Nigerian air force personnel and their plane, the Burkinabe authorities are essentially exacting revenge against Nigeria and thumping their nose at President Tinubu. Capt. Ibrahim Traore, 37, has not forgiven President Tinubu for leading ECOWAS to issue those threats and imposing a raft of sanctions after Traore deposed President Paul-Henri Sandaogo on September 30, 2022.  Burkina Faso is spoiling for a serious diplomatic squabble with Nigeria. I will not be surprised if Traore asks the Nigerian government to apologise to him.

This is not the time for the Nigerian leader to dawdle as usual. Tinubu should be prepared to handle this with all the deftness and skills he can muster. He needs help from other West African leaders and the African Union (AU) to resolve this and secure the release of our soldiers and aircraft. He cannot afford to treat this with the same type of levity and casualness with which he handled our security challenges before Donald Trump posted his “guns-a-blazing” threat on November 1.

Nyesom Wike celebrated his 58th birthday on Friday, but immersed in huge political turmoil, he has no reason to cheer. Days before, the Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly and 16 other members, as well as Gov. Sim Fubara, had defected to APC, leaving the FCT minister practically all by himself in his own faction of the PDP. Of course, Wike will eventually move to the APC, expectedly within the first quarter of 2026, but for now, he’s facing a big political dilemma. If he defects now, the PDP would breathe a sigh of relief and begin to rebuild and prepare in earnest for the 2027 elections.

That means Wike’s job, which was to kill the PDP, would not have been done. But if, on the other hand, he lingers a while and continues to make trouble for the Tanimu Turaki-led NWC, Fubara will have enough space and opportunity to consolidate as the leader of the APC in Rivers State. The other day, Fubara had exclaimed to a crowd that “I am the number one person in APC in Rivers State,” announcing that his agenda was to work for the reelection of President Tinubu.

Do not forget that Wike has, actually, been expelled from the PDP, and INEC has recognised that. The FCT minister is, in practical terms, no longer a useful political tool for the Tinubu strategists. The game is up!

It Was Not Yahaya Who Retired Me From Politics – Goje Fires Back At Critics

Published

on

Former Gombe State Governor and Senator representing Gombe Central, Mohammed Danjuma Goje, has dismissed claims that Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya pushed him out of politics.

He explained that he voluntarily stepped aside from the 2027 election.

Naija News reports that Goje stated this during an interview with BBC Hausa on Tuesday, following the controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary, which resulted in him losing the party’s ticket.

The former governor said he had accepted the outcome as the will of Allah and would continue to support the APC despite not securing its ticket.

“I have reached a stage in my political career where I believe I should step aside and allow younger politicians to take over. I have already informed my supporters in Gombe that I will not contest the 2027 election following what happened,” Goje said.

He rejected suggestions that Governor Inuwa Yahaya had politically retired him.

“It was not Inuwa Yahaya who retired me from politics. It was Allah who decided that I would not continue with this matter,” Goje said.

He added that he could still return to the Senate if he decided to contest under another political party and secured its ticket.

Goje also said he did not consider his failure to secure the APC ticket as a betrayal.

“As a Muslim, I know that everything comes from Allah. It is not about betrayal. In politics, I can only show gratitude,” he said.

The former governor disclosed that he had decided as far back as 2019 not to seek another term in the Senate but was persuaded by his supporters and constituents to contest again.

“This time too, the decision was made quickly. I did not intend to contest, but I was persuaded. Since Allah has decided that I will not contest, there is no cause for concern,” he said.

According to him, his long experience in politics had also changed the nature of his political contests.

Tinubu Inherited An Economy In Shambles — Akpabio

Published

Akpabio Advocates For Human Capital Growth

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said the President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress administration has enough achievements to present to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpabio said the administration inherited a difficult economic situation, claiming that 27 states were unable to pay workers’ salaries and pensions when Tinubu assumed office in 2023.

He stated this on Monday when members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, TETFund and NELFund, led by its Chairman, Senator Dandutse Mohammed, paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said, “The current President has done a lot for Nigerians. He met an economy in shambles. When he came in, 27 states could not pay salaries and pensions, but today, the story has changed because of his reengineering and thinking out of the box. In 2027, Nigerians will separate the chaff from the grains and re-elect President Tinubu for a second term in office.

“We have a President who thinks outside the box, bringing about innovation. We will have something to tell Nigerians about the unprecedented achievements of Mr President at the campaign grounds. Someone who is challenging him cannot even tell us what he did when he was governor.

“I can tell you what I did when I was the governor of my state. We will tell them a lot. Those in the opposition know too well the achievements of this government in the area of the economy, agriculture, security, education and fiscal policy, but because they are in the opposition, they won’t say it.”

Akpabio also defended the performance of the 10th National Assembly, saying the Senate had passed legislation aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.

“The 10th Senate under my leadership has made giant strides, and we are very proud of it. We will continue to collaborate with the Executive arm of government to achieve more for Nigerians.

“Even in this period of our annual vacation, you are here in Uyo doing your job. We don’t need to listen to social media because it is garbage in, garbage out,” he noted.

The Senate President urged lawmakers who would not return to the 11th Senate to remain committed to the APC and Tinubu’s administration.

Akpabio assured them that their loyalty to the party and the President would be recognised, while urging them to continue contributing to the success of the administration.

Earlier, Mohammed said the committee’s visit was part of its constitutional responsibilities and an opportunity to pay homage to the Senate President.

“We are here today for a very important constitutional responsibility and to pay homage to our leader. The Senate President of the Republic of Nigeria. Under your leadership, we have enacted laws that are benefiting the Nigerian masses.

“Nigerian parents are happy because of TETFund and NELFund. We are in Akwa Ibom State on sensitisation and oversight of all of the infrastructure executed by TETFund.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I want to sincerely appreciate your support. This law is fundamental to the success story of the development of Nigeria, because education is key to success.”, he noted.

2027: Atiku Vows To Boycott Any Presidential Debate Lacking Tinubu’s Appearance

Published

on

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to boycott any presidential debate that does not include President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Daily Voice reports that Atiku’s position was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by his campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo.

Atiku frowned at the practice of organising debates involving only opposition candidates, describing it as untenable and a strategy the APC government has been using to instigate further attacks among the opposition.

According to Atiku, presidential debates should allow both the ruling party and opposition parties to present their policies and programmes to Nigerians.

The statement reads, “Political contest worldwide has always been between the ruling party and the opposition parties. Presidential debates worldwide have also been organised between the ruling party and the opposition.

“The situation in Nigeria today in which presidential debates are organised among the opposition parties only is therefore untenable. This has become a strategy that the failed, incompetent, and corrupt APC government under Tinubu has been using to further instigate the opposition to attack each other while shielding itself from scrutiny by the Nigerian people.

“HE Atiku Abubakar, as the leader of the coalition of opposition parties and leaders, is left with no other choice than to make his appearance in any presidential debates conditional on the participation of President Bola Tinubu and the APC. There is no hiding place for APC in 2027.

“HE Atiku Abubakar is willing to engage the Nigerian people through interviews, townhall meetings, press conferences, and any other forum of interaction with the people but will not participate in any arrangement that will pit the opposition against itself and give undue advantage to APC.

“HE Atiku Abubakar, therefore, challenges President Bola Tinubu to a national presidential debate which will provide an opportunity for both the ruling party and the opposition parties to address Nigerians on their policies and ways to achieve those policies so that Nigerians can make an informed choice for the 2027 elections.”
