APC Takes Fresh Action on Fubara, Uzodimma’s Primary Screening

Published

on

A total of thirty governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC), including notable figures such as Imo State’s Governor Hope Uzodimma, Rivers State’s Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and former Oyo State Secretary to the Government Sarafadeen Alli, have reportedly been cleared to participate in the party’s primaries in preparation for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Sources within the party have confirmed this development to Vanguard, although the official release of the screening report has been delayed due to numerous petitions received.

Initially, the APC had planned to announce the names of the cleared aspirants on May 13, aligning with the timetable established by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In this screening process, the party received applications from approximately 2,980 aspirants aiming for various elective positions, which include a presidential slot, 28 governorship roles, 109 Senate seats, 360 House of Representatives positions, and 991 state assembly roles.

However, as of late Wednesday, the screening report had yet to be released.

A senior APC official told Vanguard that the party was still reviewing the report to ensure all complaints and petitions were properly addressed.

“We are still working on the screening report to make sure everything goes well,” the source said.

When reminded that May 13 was almost over, the source responded, “The day is not over.”

The official further disclosed that several petitions were submitted against aspirants by different screening panels.

“For instance, one of the panels received 10 petitions and the petitions have to be treated on their merit,” the source added.

The party source dismissed reports that Governor Fubara had been disqualified from the exercise.

“Nooo! No governor has been booted out. The party has always supported its governors. Some of them like Uzodimma got automatic clearance,” the source stated.

According to party insiders, the APC leadership is working towards achieving consensus arrangements in several states to avoid post-primary litigation and internal divisions.

However, where consensus fails, the party plans to conduct direct primaries in line with the Electoral Act.

“We know some of the high-profile aspirants don’t want to consent and are ready to go to court. We don’t want that,” another source said.

Another party source disclosed that former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who is seeking the APC governorship ticket in Oyo State, may face challenges during the clearance process.

According to the source, the former Minister has issues and may not be cleared.

The source, however, confirmed that Sarafadeen Alli had already secured the backing of the party leadership.

Meanwhile, the battle for the Ogun East senatorial ticket between Governor Dapo Abiodun and Senator Gbenga Daniel remains unresolved.

According to party sources, efforts to secure a consensus arrangement between both camps have yet to yield results.

“The matter has not been settled. Daniel is not ready to consent to consensus,” the source said.

Fresh political tension is brewing within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State following reports that former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, may face serious hurdles in securing the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the next election cycle.

Party insiders disclosed that Adelabu, who is seeking the APC governorship ticket in Oyo State, could encounter difficulties during the screening and clearance process due to unresolved issues within the party.

According to the source, the former minister may not eventually secure clearance, a development said to be fueling fresh uncertainty around his political future in the APC.

“Former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who is seeking the APC governorship ticket in Oyo State, may face challenges during the clearance process. He has issues and may not be cleared,” the source stated.

The source further hinted that the former minister is already weighing political alternatives and may soon defect to an opposition party if the situation within the APC becomes unfavorable.

The latest development has intensified speculations over possible cracks within the Oyo APC as consultations, alignments and behind-the-scenes lobbying continue ahead of the party’s internal processes.

Adelabu, popularly known as “Penkelemesi,” was the APC governorship candidate in Oyo State during the 2019 election before later serving as Minister of Power under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Adelabu nor the Oyo State chapter of the APC has officially reacted to the claims surrounding his clearance or alleged plans to join the opposition.

Peter Obi Claims Tinubu's St. Lucia Visit Is for 'Titles'

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, has said he would be ready to serve only one term as Nigeria’s president if elected.

Naija News reports that Obi made this known during an interview on News Central TV on Wednesday.

Speaking during the interview, Obi said a single four-year term would allow him focus on stabilising the country and handling urgent national problems. According to him, the pressure and responsibility attached to leading Nigeria are too serious for anyone to remain in office longer than necessary without making real impact.

He said: “I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day longer than four years… even with a gun in my head.”

The former governor of Anambra State also attacked the country’s current economic situation. He claimed that the level of borrowing under the present administration had risen beyond what previous governments accumulated over the years.

Obi further said Nigeria’s condition had worsened economically and in terms of security. He argued that the nation’s standing globally had dropped in recent years and blamed poor leadership for the situation.

He also criticized the handling of insecurity across different parts of the country. Obi questioned why killings could happen in places such as Jos, Niger and Benue while national leaders remained in Abuja without immediate action.

According to him, leadership requires direct involvement during periods of crisis.

He said leaders must visit troubled areas, understand the situation firsthand and provide practical solutions instead of remaining distant from events affecting citizens.

"No Single-Term Deal For Fubara," Declares Ijaw Youth President

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers state has dismissed reports claiming he has defected to the National Democratic Congress, insisting that he remains a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Siminalayi Fubara said the reports were false and stemmed from misinformation circulating on social media and in sections of the press.

He stressed that nothing had changed regarding his political affiliation, urging the public to disregard speculation being spread online.

“I know there’s been a lot of drama in the media, one story and another. I’m a member of the All Progressives Congress, and nothing has changed,” he said.

Fubara cautioned against the spread of unverified claims, adding that public commentary should be based on confirmed facts rather than assumptions or social media interpretations.

He also urged Nigerians to avoid misrepresenting his position based on rumours.

“People should stop using whatever situation that they pick up from social media or their own interpretation of any situation to present me wrongly,” he said.

Reaffirming his stance, the governor maintained that he remains firmly in the APC.

“I have not gone anywhere. I’m still a member of the All Progressives Congress, and I remain a member,” he added.

Fubara further called for unity within the party, stressing that political engagement should be guided by collective interest rather than division or speculation.
