Breaking: Akpabio Takes Fresh Move Against Natasha; Tackles Justice Binta Nyako

Akpabio, Natasha Urged To Seek Out-of-Court Settlement

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has challenged the judgment of the Federal High Court judgment in favour of suspended Senator Natasha Akpati Uduaghan

In an 11-ground appeal, the Senate president argued that the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter

The Senate president also accused Justice Binta Nyako of erring, adding that she raised matters that were not presented by any of the parties in the ruling.

Channels TV reported that the legal team of the Senate president is seeking to challenge the jurisdiction of the High Court, insisting that the matter remains the internal affairs of the National Assembly and that the court did not have the power to hear the matter, citing Section 251 of the 1999 Constitution.

Akpabio’s legal team presented 11 grounds of appeal and faulted the ruling of the Federal High Court that dismissed its preliminary objection. The team claimed that the court order affected the procedures of the parliament that were protected by the law.

The Senate president explained that the issues relating to suspension, comments uttered during plenary, and the resolution of the Chamber are protected under the Legislative Houses (Power and Privileges) Act, and thus cannot be a subject of judicial interference

Another argument Akpabio presented was that the suit was premature and Natasha failed to exhaust all the channels for internal dispute resolution within the Senate, particularly the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, as stipulated in the Senate Standing Orders, 2023 (as amended).

He also faulted the court trial for breaching his right to a fair hearing by raising issues that were not presented by any of the parties in the suit. The example cited was the question of whether Natasha’s suspension was excessive.

The Senate president explained that Justice Nyako erred when he made recommendations for her to be recalled without giving the parties to address the core issue.

Justice Binta Nyako of the court, in a judgment on Friday, July 4, ordered the recall of Senator Natasha, adding that the six-month suspension that the Senate slammed on the Kogi lawmaker was “excessive”.

The court also faulted the Senate Standing Rules’ Chapter 8 and Section 14 of the Legislative Houses, Powers and Privileges Act, stating that the two provisions were overreaching. The two legislative guidelines did not specify the maximum period of time that a sitting lawmaker can be suspended from office.

‘Very Strange’ – Senate Denies Forgery Allegation By Oshiomhole In Senator Natasha’s Suspension

Published

on

The Nigerian Senate has denied an allegation that some signatures were forged in the incidents leading to the suspension of Kogi Central lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, said the forgery allegation by Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole is totally untrue.

Dailyvoice recalls that Oshiomhole alleged that the signatures of at least three lawmakers were forged or improperly included in the report that recommended the six-month suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

He made the claim while reacting to comments by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, who described Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension as one of the lowest points of the 10th Senate.

Speaking on Monday during an interview on AIT, the former Edo State governor said that some senators whose names appeared in the report had privately told him they had neither signed the document nor endorsed its recommendations.

However, Adaramodu, in a phone conversation with The Cable on Tuesday, dismissed Oshiomhole’s claim.

“That is not true. Signatures forged, over what?” he said.

He also stated that Senator Ireti Kingibe, whose name was mentioned by Oshiomhole, had never complained to the Senate.

According to him, senators have an independent mind and the allegations about a purported forgery are very strange.

“If Senator Kingibe had anything against any procedure, she would report it on the floor of the senate, not to an individual.

“But it is not even true, because I was part of the ethics and public petitions committee that listened to the matter.

“Nobody will say that he or she was coerced or somebody’s signature was forged; that has never happened in the senate and it cannot happen. It has never happened.

“Senators are independent-minded people. We are mature men and women. And if you have any infraction against anybody, that person can, without any advocate from anywhere, that person will show it. So there’s nothing like that. I’m just hearing it for the first time. That’s very strange,” Adaramodu said.

Asked whether the Senate would sanction Oshiomhole over the allegations, Adaramodu said the chamber would first examine the remarks before taking a stand.

“We are going to review any statements made by him. The senate will take a cursory look at either extraneous, spontaneous or intentional comments from any senator appropriately.

“We are going to look into it. We will take a stand and everyone will know where we stand. But we can say no senator has reported that his or her senator was forged during the Natasha matter.

“It was debated on the floor of the senate openly at the plenary in the full glare of every Nigerian and even the international audience, and so nothing to hide.

“All Nigerians knew where we stood then on the issue of Natasha… that she ran foul of the senate’s orders. And we are orderly because we are bounded by orders of the senate,” he said.

Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended in March 2025 over allegations of gross misconduct and unruly behaviour following her dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Armed Robbers Kill Phone Shop Operator In Abuja

Suspected gunmen on Monday night attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State, killing three security operatives in an attempt to breach the country’s foremost policy institution.

Sources said the attackers stormed the facility at about 11:40 p.m. and opened fire, sparking a fierce exchange with security personnel stationed at the institute.

A staff member of the institute, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying the attackers launched the assault unexpectedly. According to the source, security operatives engaged the assailants in a gun battle to prevent them from gaining access to the premises.

The staff member disclosed that three security personnel were killed in the attack, including two soldiers and one police officer attached to the institute’s security detail.

He added that the swift response of security operatives prevented the gunmen from penetrating deeper into the facility or causing further damage. The source, however, said the motive behind the attack was still unknown at the time of filing this report.

A resident of Kuru in Jos South Local Government Area, Bulus Haruna, said the attack caused panic in surrounding communities as sustained gunfire echoed for several minutes.

He said residents were thrown into fear following the sound of heavy shooting during the night attack.

Efforts by newsmen to reach the Plateau State Police Command for confirmation were unsuccessful as of press time, and attempts to obtain official comments from NIPSS management were also unsuccessful.

Police Arrest Three Suspected Gang Members In Adamawa

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested three suspected criminals, including two alleged members of the notorious Shilla gang, in separate operations aimed at tackling violent crime in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya.

According to the statement, “The Adamawa State Police Command has recorded another significant breakthrough in its sustained fight against Shilla gangsterism and other violent crimes within Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas.”

The police said one of the suspects, 22-year-old Abdulmalik Mohammed of the Zango area, was arrested on June 12 after allegedly attacking a passenger aboard a commercial tricycle along the Doubeli Bye-Pass.

The statement said the suspect, armed with a cutlass, “reportedly attacked the victim and dispossessed him of his mobile phone.”

Police said members of the public apprehended the suspect after the victim raised an alarm and attempted mob action against him before operatives attached to the Doubeli Divisional Police Headquarters intervened and took him into custody.

Preliminary investigations, according to the command, linked the suspect to a series of theft cases within the Yola metropolis, including the theft of a sewing machine at Tsohon Kasuwa. The police added that efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest other persons connected to the alleged crimes.

In another operation conducted on June 14, police operatives on confidence-building patrol arrested two suspected Shilla gang members identified as Abba Abdullahi, 17, and Abdulrahman Saidu, 16.

The suspects were allegedly found in possession of dangerous knives “suspected to have been intended for use in committing criminal acts at a birthday party,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, commended the operatives for what the command described as their “proactive response and professionalism” in carrying out the operations.

The statement added that the police chief “reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to dismantling Shilla gangs and other criminal groups threatening the peace and security of residents.”

The command urged residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with timely and credible information, assuring that all reports would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
