The Abduction

Gunmen intercepted Grace Ogunleye, the Vice-Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area, along the Ipere–Iludun road on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. The incident occurred while she was driving toward Ido Ekiti following an official visit to the local government secretariat. Her abandoned vehicle was later found by the roadside, and her mobile phone was switched off immediately following the attack. Falade Sunday, the LGA’s director of information, quickly alerted security forces to launch a search.

The Rescue

Following a swift, coordinated operation, the Ekiti State Police Command confirmed that Ogunleye was rescued unharmed. Police spokesperson Sunday Abutu stated that a joint team of police officers, military personnel, and local security operatives successfully pressured the kidnappers into releasing her. Falade Adegoroye Michael, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, has ordered a full-scale investigation to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.

Meet 39-Year-Old Prof. Segun Aina Appointed As New JAMB Registrar

President Bola Tinubu has appointed 39-year-old Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, succeeding Professor Ishaq Oloyede, whose tenure expires on July 31, 2026.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Oloyede’s decade at JAMB was, by most accounts, transformational. Within three years of assuming office in 2016, he overhauled the board’s operations and finances. Remittances to the Federal Government rose sharply from less than ₦50 million between 1978 and 2016, to ₦7.8 billion in 2017 alone.

From 2016 to 2026, JAMB remitted ₦20.7 billion in operating surplus and funded physical and human development projects from internally generated revenue.

Here are key facts about Prof. Aina:

1. Aina is a professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, with expertise in digital infrastructure, national examination systems and institutional reforms.

B.Eng. (Hons.) Computer Systems Engineering – 2008

M.Sc. Internet Computing and Network Security – 2009

Ph.D. Electrical Engineering (Signal Processing) – 2015

Registered Engineer, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) – 2017

. He is a distinguished academic and systems expert with extensive experience in national examination systems, digital infrastructure, and public-sector institutional reform.

3. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, an MSc in Internet Computing and Network Security.

4. He also holds a PhD in Digital Signal Processing, both from Loughborough University, United Kingdom.

5. He has also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

Aina has over 15 years of professional experience advising federal and state governments on digital transition, institutional reforms and system design.

7. He is one of Nigeria’s youngest professors in Computer Engineering and will become the youngest registrar in JAMB’s history.

8. Aina had previously worked as a consultant to examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board on ICT systems and examination integrity.

WARRI DELINEATION: Itsekiri Leaders Fault INEC’s Fresh Proposals

Itsekiri Leaders of Thought, ILOT, has faulted the fresh delineation of wards, polling units and state constituencies proposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for Warri Federal Constituency.

ILOT described the process that produced the proposal as fraudulent, saying the fieldwork and GIS mapping conducted by INEC did not comply with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Electoral Act 2026 and INEC’s own guidelines for the delineation of wards and polling units.

Secretary of ILOT, Sir Amorighoye Mene, in a statement, said the Itsekiri reject INEC’s recommendations.

The statement reads: “ILOT hereby rejects the new proposed fresh delineation of wards, polling units, state constituencies and one additional federal constituency in warri arising from the fieldwork and GIS mapping conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released on May 20 in Asaba Delta State.

“While we welcome the creation of two additional state constituencies and one federal constituency the devil is in the details/composition. The composition is based on the earlier rejected fraudulent data released by INEC on April 4, 2025, at Asaba in Delta State.

“Our position is based on our firm conviction that the exercise, as presently conducted, does not comply with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Electoral Act 2026, and INEC’s own guidelines for the delineation of wards and polling units.

“While we acknowledge the judgment of the Supreme Court in Suit No. SC/143/2016 directing INEC to conduct a fresh delineation exercise in Warri South, Warri South-West, and Warri North Local Government Areas, we must clearly state that the Supreme Court did not declare the existing wards, polling units, or voter register as fake or fictitious.

“We are deeply concerned that INEC, in the course of its field operations and GIS mapping, appears to have exceeded its constitutional mandate by engaging in activities outside its electoral responsibilities, including the identification and recognition of communities, demographic interpretations, and territorial classifications. We maintain that INEC’s role is strictly administrative and electoral, not ethnographic or territorial.

“We further reject any attempt to rely on unofficial population estimates, aerial mapping interpretations, or artificially created community structures as the basis for electoral delineation. Any process that departs from constitutionally recognized data and lawful electoral procedures undermines the integrity and credibility of the democratic process.

“We also consider it necessary to correct the false narrative that the Ijaw and Urhobo ethnic groups in Warri Federal Constituency have been denied political representation. The political history of the constituency clearly demonstrates that both ethnic groups have occupied and continue to occupy significant political offices across Warri South, Warri South-West, and Warri North Local Government Areas.

“Furthermore, findings presented by independent geographic information and survey experts reveal major inconsistencies in the proposed polling unit coordinates released by INEC. According to these findings, several polling units were allegedly located outside their designated local government areas, while others reportedly fall within rivers, swamps, forests, Edo State, Ondo State, and other non-habitable locations.

“These findings raise serious questions about the credibility, legality, and technical integrity of the exercise. Accordingly, we call on the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate the conduct of the delineation exercise and hold accountable any officials found to have compromised the integrity of the process. “We have already submitted our formal objections to INEC and the Office of the National Security Adviser, and we expect those concerns to be treated with the seriousness they deserve.

“Finally, we condemn any threat to peace, security, or national infrastructure in response to this process. We urge all stakeholders to pursue lawful, peaceful, and democratic engagement while INEC concludes consultations and reaches a final decision.

“We remain committed to fairness, constitutional order, justice, and the peaceful coexistence of all ethnic nationalities within the Warri Federal Constituency.”

BREAKING: Government Declares 5-Day Public Holiday

The Kano State government has announced five days public holiday for all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Misbahu Yakasai.

According to the statement, day schools will begin the Sallah break from Friday, May 22, 2026, and resume academic activities on Monday, June 1, 2026.

It added that boarding schools across the state are to proceed on holiday from Saturday, May 23, 2026, and resume on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

The ministry advised parents and guardians of students in boarding schools to ensure compliance with the directive.

“Parents and guardians of students in boarding schools are advised to pick up their children on the approved closing date, Saturday, May 23, 2026, and ensure their timely return on the resumption date,” the statement said.

The Commissioner for Education, Ali Makoda, extended his greetings to students, teachers, parents, and members of the education community ahead of the festivities.

Makoda wished them a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
