FULL LIST: 5 New Things That Will Happen to NYSC Members as Tinubu Takes Fresh Action

Published

on

President Bola Tinubu has publicly explained the rationale behind his administration’s sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing the changes as the most significant overhaul of the scheme since its founding in 1973.

Tinubu outlined the reforms in a statement published on his official X handle on Wednesday, two days after the Federal Executive Council gave its approval on Monday, June 30.

“On the day I was sworn in as your President, I promised to create meaningful opportunities for our young people. I said women and youth would feature prominently in our administration, and this reform is partly the actualisation of that promise,” he said.

While acknowledging that the NYSC had preserved national unity for over five decades, Tinubu argued that Nigeria’s current realities demand a more purposeful approach.

He noted that young people constitute nearly 70 per cent of the country’s population, calling them “the engine” rather than a burden to be managed, Punch reported.

  • Under the new framework, the orientation programme will be extended to six weeks and restructured to cover civic responsibility, leadership, career readiness, entrepreneurship, digital and financial literacy, and specialised training tied to each corps member’s academic background.
  • Training sectors will include agriculture, health, technology, education, law, public service, infrastructure, the green economy, the creative economy, enterprise, and para-military and security services.
  • Deployment will shift to a technology-driven call-up system, with primary postings aligned more closely to individual skills and career streams. For states facing security challenges, Tinubu said deployment would prioritise indigenes, residents, graduates of institutions in those states, and corps members from neighbouring states within the same geopolitical zone.
  • On governance, the NYSC will be led by a civilian Director-General supported by three Executive Directors, one of whom, the Security Services Executive Director, will be drawn from the military or paramilitary ranks. Orientation camps will be assessed under a national grading and certification framework, and states will be required to meet minimum operational standards.
  • Passing-Out Parade would be renamed a Graduation Ceremony, reflecting the administration’s intention for corps members to exit the scheme as trained contributors rather than simply completing a mandatory obligation.

“Every corps member must leave NYSC better prepared for work, enterprise and national service,” he stated.

The President commended the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, Special Adviser on Policy and Coordination Hadiza Bala Usman, the Federal Ministry of Education, and members of the reform committee for their work on the initiative.

He subsequently directed the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Federal Ministry of Justice to initiate amendments to the NYSC Act and its subsidiary regulations, giving the reforms a formal legal foundation.

“To every young Nigerian: this nation believes in you. We are building a country worthy of your talent, your ambition and your future,” Tinubu added.

Okonkwo Confirms Open 2027 Coalition Ticket

Actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo has announced his appointment as the spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Okonkwo expressed gratitude to God and thanked Atiku for entrusting him with the responsibility.

“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he said.

Okonkwo described the appointment as evidence of Atiku’s democratic credentials, stating that the former vice president prefers dialogue and compromise over conflict whenever disagreements arise among his associates.

According to him, recent discussions involving Atiku and members of the African Democratic Congress addressed concerns relating to the South-East and provided assurances within the framework of the Electoral Act, 2026 and prevailing political realities.

He also acknowledged the contributions of several individuals whom he credited with supporting the coalition’s political efforts.

Okonkwo expressed special appreciation to Kashim Imam for what he described as valuable intervention and counsel that reinforced the vision of an inclusive Nigeria, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, gender, age, or cultural background.

He further thanked Ralphs Nwosu for his sacrifices in strengthening the ADC amid challenges confronting the coalition.

The newly appointed spokesperson also commended Ekene Onwuka for helping assemble a strong campaign team aimed at securing Atiku’s victory in the 2027 presidential election.

Oyo Schools To Reopen Thursday As NUT Suspends Strike

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has suspended its industrial action across all public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State, directing its members to return to their classrooms on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

According to the union, the decision to suspend the strike followed renewed discussions with the Oyo State Government, which gave fresh assurances on strengthening security measures to protect schools after the recent abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.

In a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State Chairman of the union, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the State Secretary, Comrade Olukayode Salami, the union revealed that the suspension received full clearance from its national leadership after a thorough review of the current security situation and appeals by state stakeholders.

The industrial action was originally declared to protest the kidnapping of educators and students, but the union chose to halt the strike in the interest of the general public, the learners, and the teachers themselves.

The body said the Oyo State government has committed to an array of safety operations, including intensifying the rescue mission for the missing victims, establishing a well-equipped Joint Security Task Force to patrol vulnerable access roads, and upgrading general school infrastructure.

Furthermore, the government promised to strengthen the Safe School Initiative through improved early warning systems, deploy advanced surveillance technology, provide psychosocial support to rescued victims, and ensure the payment of gratuities to the families of deceased teachers.

While applauding its members and affiliated associations like the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria for their resilience, the union urged all returning educators to maintain high levels of situational awareness.

“The Nigeria Union of Teachers hereby directs all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to resume official duties on Thursday, July 2, 2026,” the union executives stated in their joint release.

“We sincerely appreciate all our members, ANCOPSS, AOPSHON, and other stakeholders for their discipline, solidarity, and unwavering support during this period. Your cooperation has once again demonstrated our collective commitment to the welfare and safety of teachers and learners.”

The union leadership also emphasized that the return to work does not mean they will overlook any future lapses in regional security, urging teachers to actively report unusual movements.

“We urge all teachers to remain vigilant, law-abiding and promptly report any suspicious activities or security threats within their schools and communities to the relevant authorities. Together, we can build safer schools for our children and educators,” the statement noted.
