BREAKING: Nigerian Gov Declares Public Holiday Across State
The Bauchi State Government has declared Monday, August 17, 2026, as a work-free day across the state to enable civil servants and other public servants to participate in the forthcoming Local Government Council elections.
The declaration covers workers at the local, state and federal levels serving in the state, as well as employees in the banking sector.
The decision was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.
Gidado said the declaration followed the announcement by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission fixing Monday for the conduct of elections into the Local Government Councils across the state.
He said the measure was intended to provide eligible citizens with the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote without being hindered by official duties.
According to him, “The declaration is intended to provide eligible citizens the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote and contribute to the democratic process at the grassroots level without disruption arising from official duties.
“However, workers engaged in essential services are exempted,” he added.
The governor’s aide urged residents of the state to come out peacefully and exercise their franchise in accordance with the law.
He also called on eligible voters to conduct themselves responsibly before, during and after the elections.
“The State Government assures citizens that all relevant authorities will work to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral environment and urges everyone to cooperate with security agencies and electoral officials in the discharge of their responsibilities,” Gidado stated.
The government wished residents a peaceful and successful Local Government Council election.

BREAKING: Nigerian Gov Declares Public Holiday Across State
Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared Friday, August 14, a holiday for civil servants across the state, giving them time to travel and prepare to cast their votes in the 2026 governorship election.
The announcement came through a circular on Wednesday, August 12, signed by the Head of Service, Elder Ayanleye Aina. According to the circular, the decision covers all categories of public workers except those performing emergency and essential services, who are expected to remain on duty.
In a pre-election message directed at the workforce, the Osun governor called on state employees to go beyond their own votes and actively bring in others.
He asked workers to reach out to artisans, informal workers, and professional bodies, framing Saturday’s poll as a defence of the gains made over the past three and a half years of his administration.
The governor praised the labour leadership and workers for their support throughout his tenure, describing the relationship between his government and Osun workers as one that had been mutually beneficial.
“The time for action has come. As formal workers at state establishments, I task you to mobilise informal workers, artisans and professional bodies. We must remain strong in defence of our constitutional rights to vote and be voted for,” Adeleke said.
He added: “We must defend the gains of the last three and half years plus. Ours is a workers friendly government which has delivered across board to labour and Osun people. We cannot and must not allow a return to dark days.”
The governorship election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 15, across polling units in Osun state. Nigeria’s main electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is in charge of the election.
