ICPC Recovers N20bn In 2024, Says Chairman
Chairman of Independent and Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Dr Musa Aliyu, says the commission recovered more than N20 billion and other properties from corrupt individuals in 2024.
Mr Aliyu said this on Monday in Ilorin during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on the sidelines of a Conference of State Attorneys-General in the North-Central Zones.
The conference had as its theme “Strengthening Subnational Synergies for Corruption Prevention: Advancing the National Anti-Corruption Strategy in Nigeria’s North Central Region”.

Mr Aliyu, who noted that corruption was not only at federal levels, but also at the sub-nationals, said that prevention was more strategic, less costly, and would help retain the country’s assets and resources.
“If we allow corruption to happen, it becomes very difficult to cure, especially the litigation processes.
“We all know that the judicial process in Nigeria is too slow, because of many cases on the table and that is why we should prevent corruption.
“But if it eventually happens, we will now go for enforcement, which is the investigation and probably prosecution”, he said.
The ICPC boss, however, said that the commission was ensuring that assets taken outside the shores of Africa, and recovered were not looted again.
“One of the strategies identified as a necessary tool for success in our shared pursuit of justice, is the continuity and reassessment of our efforts in the fight against corruption, as criminal trends evolve and national events unfold.
“This discussion is essential, especially as the country is undergoing significant judicial reforms and rapid legislative enhancements,” he said.Digital newspaper subscriptions
Mr Aliyu, however, said that the commission would not relent in its fight against corruption in the country.
The Chairman Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, Dr Abdullahi Bello, who declared the event open, said that corruption remained a major obstacle to Nigeria’s progress.
Mr Bello said that effective anti-corruption measures at the state level was critical to achieving national progress.

“Corruption remains a formidable obstacle to our nation’s progress, eroding public trust, undermining governance, and impeding development.
“Today’s engagement provides an essential platform for State Attorneys-General in the North-Central zone to share experiences, address challenges, and develop collective solutions to advance the National Anti-Corruption Strategy”, he said.
The CCB chairman said that the bureau had introduced initiatives to enhance transparency and accountability among public servants.

He said the bureau was developing an online asset declaration system, which would offer a more efficient and modern platform for public officers to comply with the law.
Also, the Kwara Attorney-General, Senior Sulyman, called for more coordinated efforts at fighting corruption.
Mr Sulyman commended the ICPC for ensuring the anti-corruption mandate in the country, while reiterating the state government’s commitment to ensuring zero level of corruption.
In his goodwill message, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Anti-corruption, Kayode Akiolu, said that corruption was a national phenomenon which had not allowed the country to deliver its national promises since independence.
Mr Akiolu said the national assembly was committed to winning the battle against corruption, adding that the 10th assembly had ensured the adequate funding of anti-corruption agencies.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Anti-corruption, Sen. Emmanuel Udende, said Attorneys-General were the custodian of justice at state levels and must be heard.
Mr Udende commended the ICPC for decentralising the fight against corruption, while calling for unified action.
In his remarks, the State Chief Judge, Justice Abiodun Adebara, said that there was need for joint efforts to implement the five pillars of anti-corruption.
“The fight against corruption should not be punitive but preventive, because it poses a threat to the rule of law”, he said.

Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has condemned the gruesome murder of five worshippers during an early morning prayer in Yandoto village, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Speaking via his 𝕏 account, he insisted that the killers should be wiped out, adding that there should be no room for discussions or negotiations.
Fani-Kayode asserted that the killers are terrorists not bandits and described their actions as an act of war.
He wrote: “These are not bandits. Pls stop calling them bandits. They are bloodthirsty killers and terrorists and every single one of them should be wiped off the face of the earth.
“If our people cannot worship God in peace then we have nothing. No negotiation, no discussion, no ransom payments, no rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has accused Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of failing to address the escalating banditry crisis in the state.
Naija News reports that a deadly attack occurred on Sunday in Oke-Ode, Ifelodun Local Government Area, which left several residents and vigilante members dead.
Speaking via a statement on Monday, the Publicity Secretary of the party, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, described the massacre as “a despicable and senseless act.”
He blamed the governor for the insecurity situation in the state, noting that it is a monumental leadership failure.
Adewara said, “The gruesome videos of the casualties circulating online make it look like Kwara is now at war. Under AbdulRahman’s watch, terror is reigning, kidnappers are taking over rural villages, and nowhere is safe again.”
The opposition party faulted AbdulRazaq’s alleged silence and absence from the affected community, insisting that a responsible leader should have personally visited Oke-Ode to commiserate with victims’ families and give assurances of decisive action.
It further accused the governor of neglecting local vigilantes and security personnel “battling criminals in the bush,” while diverting funds to “footballers and entertainers outside the state.”
The PDP’s criticism comes amid rising concern in Kwara North, where repeated bandit attacks have forced residents to abandon farms, schools, and businesses.

In an Independence Day message released by his media office, obtained by Legit.ng, Atiku lamented that Nigerians are enduring excruciating pains from raging insecurity, rising food scarcity, mass unemployment, and a dangerous climate of hopelessness.
The presidential hopeful accused the Tinubu administration of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.
Atiku declared: “It is tragic that in a country blessed with immense human and material resources, millions of our people have been reduced to refugees and beggars in their fatherland. Every responsible government holds the welfare and security of its citizens as supreme. But what we have today is an administration that has abandoned its people. Hunger is killing Nigerians, bandits are massacring communities, yet President Tinubu and his cabinet stand by, unmoved and uncaring.”
Furthermore, Atiku called on citizens not to lose faith, reminding Nigerians that the 2027 election provides a clear opportunity to reject bad leadership and reclaim the promise of a better tomorrow.
He said: “The beauty of democracy lies in the power of the ballot. Oppressed and battered as our people may feel today, they will have the chance to sweep away this inept government at the next polls. That is the power no cabal can take away from the people.”
At 65, Atiku noted, Nigeria remains “a giant moving painfully slow on feet of clay”.
The 78-year-old blamed Nigeria’s condition on “a direct result of decades of poor leadership and wasteful governance.”
He bemoaned: “Yet, he urged Nigerians to keep hope alive, insisting that with the right leadership, the country can still rise from the ashes of failed governance to reclaim its rightful place among the comity of nations.”
