Tinubu Reveals Ex-Military Leader With Democratic Ideals

President Bola Tinubu has said the late General Murtala Muhammed, a former military head of state, was “a military officer with democratic traditions and love in his veins.” The president said that the short-lived administration laid the foundation for the return of democracy and the liberation of Africa.
The president made the comment while being represented by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. He spoke at the event designed to commemorate the late military leader, organised by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation in Abuja. The event was attended by African presidents, diplomats and traditional rulers.
His statement reads in part:
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu salutes the family and the Foundation for this event. He says Murtala Muhammed was a military officer with democratic traditions and love in his veins.”
Akume said that during the short period that Muhammed presided over the country, the late military leader put every policy in place to return Nigeria to potential democracy, even though his life was cut short. He added that Muhammed put a solid team in place to ensure the democratic transition of the government.
The Tribune reported that the presidential appointee explained that Muhammed’s successor, Olusegun Obasanjo, sustained the transition programme, which was supported by members of the Supreme Military Council. President Tinubu then praised the former military head of state for fighting corruption with the skills and talent given to him by God. He said Muhammed will continue to be remembered and respected by all Nigerians.
Tinubu also highlighted the commitment of the former Nigerian leader to the liberation of Africa, adding that he “believed in Africa” and sought the “total deconstruction of colonial rule on the continent.” He recalled that Nigeria played a crucial role in the struggle to decolonise Angola, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe, and in the eventual end of apartheid in South Africa.
Tinubu speaks on the assassination of General Muhammed
Speaking on the assassination of General Muhammed in 1976, the SGF said he was a university student when the incident happened and reminisced about the shock that shook the country during the time. He said that students from the University of Ibadan, the Polytechnic of Ibadan and the University of Lagos mobilised and protested the unwarranted interruption in the country’s governance.
President Tinubu also expressed optimism about the prospects of Africa and urged the people not to despair. He also defended his administration’s reform.

APC-led Government Announces June 16 Public Holiday: Reason Emerges
The Borno State Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to commorate the first day of the Islamic Calender Year, 1448 after Hijira.
The year 1448 AH (Anno Hegirae) is the current year in the Islamic calendar.
Since the Hijri calendar is based on lunar cycles, it is approximately 11 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar.
As a result, the year 1448 AH overlaps parts of both the 2026 and 2027 Gregorian calendar years.
In a statement released on Sunday, the state Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar urged residents to use the period to rededicate themselves to peaceful co-existance and service to humanity and development.
The statement reads “This is to inform the general public that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON, mni, FNSE, has declared Tuesday 1st Day of Muharram 1448 After Hijira (AH), which is equivalent to Tuesday 16th June 2026 as a Public Holiday to commerate the first day of the Islamic Calender Year 1448 (AH).
“All citizens are therefore enjoined to be faithful and reflect on this important date and rededicate themselves to peaceful co-existance and service to humanity and development of our dear state in particular” he stated.
Tar also enjoined citizens to embrace the virtues of unity, solidarity, togetherness, tolerance, justice, mercy and multiculturalism that are essential to ensuring unity in diversity and unity of mankind.
“The Government and good people of Borno are committed to the unity, prosperity and existence of Nigeria, and to projecting Nigeria’s good image among the comity of nations in a globalised universe” he noted.
The commissioner said Governor Zulum enjoined the people of the state to pray for a peaceful, plural democratic entity, calling on all communities and faith groups to live in harmony and togetherness.

Fresh Tension as Bandits Kidnap Monarch, Shot Wife
Suspected kidnappers have abducted the traditional ruler of Odo-Oriya community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Adeniyi Adelana, during an attack on his palace, as reported by Naija News.
The 60-year-old monarch was reportedly whisked away on Saturday night when armed men stormed his residence and dragged him into a nearby bush.
The attack also left his wife injured after she was shot in the right hand by the assailants.
According to Naija News, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh.
According to the police, the incident occurred at about 8:05 p.m. when approximately six armed men invaded the monarch’s residence under the cover of darkness.
“Preliminary reports indicate that at about 8:05 p.m. on the reported date, a group of approximately six armed men stormed the residence of Mr. Adeniyi Adelana, aged 60, the Baale of Ode Oriya Village,” the statement read.
“The assailants reportedly invaded the premises under the cover of darkness and forcefully whisked the victim away through a nearby bush path to an unknown destination.”
Jimoh said the monarch’s wife sustained a gunshot wound during the attack but was rescued and rushed to a medical facility for treatment.
“In the course of the attack, the victim’s wife sustained a gunshot injury to her right hand. She was promptly rescued and taken to a nearby medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment and responding positively to medical care,” he added.
The command said security operatives had commenced a comprehensive search-and-rescue operation aimed at securing the safe release of the traditional ruler.
Following the distress report, the Divisional Police Officer of B Division, Owo, was said to have mobilised a joint team of police personnel and other security operatives to the scene.
“Upon receipt of the distress report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of B Division, Owo, immediately mobilized a combined team of police operatives and other security personnel to the scene,” the statement said.
“A comprehensive search-and-rescue operation was immediately activated, with security operatives combing nearby forests, bush paths, and suspected escape routes in a determined effort to track the movement of the kidnappers, secure the victim’s safe release, and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The police added that tactical deployments had been reinforced in the area and neighbouring communities to improve security and support ongoing operations.
The Commissioner of Police in the state was said to have directed all tactical units, intelligence assets and operational teams to intensify efforts to rescue the monarch and arrest those behind the abduction.
According to the command, the police remain committed to ensuring the victim is reunited with his family while those responsible face prosecution.
The command also urged residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities, while encouraging them to provide credible information that could aid the rescue effort.
The abduction is the latest in a series of violent attacks and kidnappings that have heightened concerns among residents across Ondo State.
Earlier this month, gunmen reportedly invaded Igbosi Community in Idogun, Ose Local Government Area, injuring several residents, destroying properties and abducting a nine-year-old boy identified as Oluwatobi, the son of a pastor.
In March, armed men allegedly stormed a government-owned primary health centre in the Oke Ijebu area of Akure and abducted at least six health workers during a midnight operation.
The same month, kidnappers reportedly abducted a council official and another resident in Akure North Local Government Area and demanded ransom for their release.
A health worker was also reportedly shot dead in Akure while his son was abducted, while another couple was kidnapped in Ilu-Abo community in Akure North in February.

BREAKING: Tinubu Reacts as Bandits Killed Army General
President Bola Tinubu has joined Nigerians and the Armed Forces in mourning the death of former Defence spokesperson, Major General Abubakar Rabe, who died in terrorist captivity.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed shock over the late general’s death.
Describing General Rabe as an officer with a distinguished military career, the President commiserated with his family, particularly his wife, who remains in the captors’ custody.
Tinubu also extended condolences to the Katsina State Government and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
“While the terrorists have done their worst, the government will never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies,” the President said.
Reiterating his stance on June 12, Tinubu warned, “Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State.
“These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” Tinubu said.
While reassuring Nigerians that the enemies of the nation would soon become history, the President urged citizens to remain united.
“General Abubakar’s death should further serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents.
“We must never negotiate with them on any terms, but continue to treat them as the greatest enemies of our dear nation who should never be spared,” Tinubu stated.
