ADC Vows To End APC Misrule, Opens Niger Office For 2027

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Amaechi and former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, the three presidential aspirants under the African Democratic Congress, ADC, have reportedly agreed to enter a concrete agreement to support whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer.

One of the presidential hopefuls in the coalition movement, Rotimi Amaechi, disclosed this to LEADERSHIP on Friday.

Although there are rumours that the party will zone it’s ticket to the north to allow Atiku contest against President Bola Tinubu, the ADC’s interim national chairman, Senator David Mark said the party has no preferred candidate.

The former Senate President assured ADC supporters that under his leadership, the party would be “absolutely transparent.”

Amaechi clarified that the agreement to support whoever emerges candidates would revolve around a common understanding of what a transparent primary is, expressing fear that the process may be hijacked.

“What we agreed in principle, and I must say there is a need to lay the cards on the table – what we agreed is that whoever emerges from a transparent primary will be supported by everyone.

“But first, we need to sit down and define what we mean by transparent because it’s easy for someone to hijack the process and still call it transparent,” he said.

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested three suspected criminals, including two alleged members of the notorious Shilla gang, in separate operations aimed at tackling violent crime in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya.

According to the statement, “The Adamawa State Police Command has recorded another significant breakthrough in its sustained fight against Shilla gangsterism and other violent crimes within Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas.”

The police said one of the suspects, 22-year-old Abdulmalik Mohammed of the Zango area, was arrested on June 12 after allegedly attacking a passenger aboard a commercial tricycle along the Doubeli Bye-Pass.

The statement said the suspect, armed with a cutlass, “reportedly attacked the victim and dispossessed him of his mobile phone.”

Police said members of the public apprehended the suspect after the victim raised an alarm and attempted mob action against him before operatives attached to the Doubeli Divisional Police Headquarters intervened and took him into custody.

Preliminary investigations, according to the command, linked the suspect to a series of theft cases within the Yola metropolis, including the theft of a sewing machine at Tsohon Kasuwa. The police added that efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest other persons connected to the alleged crimes.

In another operation conducted on June 14, police operatives on confidence-building patrol arrested two suspected Shilla gang members identified as Abba Abdullahi, 17, and Abdulrahman Saidu, 16.

The suspects were allegedly found in possession of dangerous knives “suspected to have been intended for use in committing criminal acts at a birthday party,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, commended the operatives for what the command described as their “proactive response and professionalism” in carrying out the operations.

The statement added that the police chief “reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to dismantling Shilla gangs and other criminal groups threatening the peace and security of residents.”

The command urged residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with timely and credible information, assuring that all reports would be treated with utmost confidentiality.

The trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was on Monday stalled after two co-defendants failed to appear before a Federal High Court in Kaduna.

El-Rufai, who is standing trial on charges of alleged abuse of office, fraud, and financial misconduct filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), was present in court for the proceedings.

The former governor arrived at the court alongside officials of the ICPC, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), and police personnel.

However, the court could not proceed with the case due to the absence of the two co-defendants, leading to an adjournment.

The matter was subsequently adjourned to June 28, 2026, for continuation of the hearing.

El-Rufai has consistently denied all allegations against him, while prosecutors allege that public funds were improperly released for projects that were either not executed or were irregularly handled during his tenure as governor.

BREAKING: Court Orders INEC to Deregister ADC, Four Other Political Parties

Published

on

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party (AP), and three other political parties.

Justice Peter Lifu, who delivered the judgment, also directed that the order apply to the Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

The ruling stemmed from a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026, filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators.

In the suit, the plaintiffs asked the court to determine whether INEC has a constitutional obligation to deregister political parties that fail to meet the performance thresholds set out in Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC regulations.

According to the former legislators, the five political parties had consistently failed to meet the required constitutional benchmarks. These include winning at least 25 percent of votes in a state during a presidential election or securing at least one elective seat at the national, state, or local government level.

They further told the court that the ADC and the four other parties performed poorly in the 2023 general elections and subsequent by-elections, failing to secure seats across key tiers of government. The plaintiffs argued that the continued recognition of the parties is unlawful and undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

On that basis, they urged the court to declare that INEC is duty-bound to deregister such parties and compel the commission to do so before preparations for the 2027 elections progress further. They also sought, and obtained, an order restraining the affected parties from participating in elections or engaging in political activities such as campaigns, rallies, and primaries.

Additionally, the suit sought an injunction barring INEC from recognizing or dealing with the parties in any official capacity.
