JUST IN: Court Sacks APC Council Chairmen Across State

Published

on

A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, has sacked the All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen and councillors elected in October 2022, ruling that their three-year tenure ended in October 2025.

Justice Adefunmilola A. Demi-Ajayi delivered the judgment on Monday in a suit filed by the affected council officials seeking elongation of their tenure.

The court held that the tenure of the elected officers had expired and dismissed the suit, noting that the claimants lacked legal grounds to institute the case in the first place.

The affected officials, who were returned to office in February 2025 following a court-related process, had approached the court to determine the actual start of their tenure after they were initially prevented from assuming office in 2022.

Counsel to the sacked chairmen and councillors, Muhydeen Adeoye, confirmed that an appeal has been filed at the Court of Appeal, Akure Division.

Six grounds of appeal were raised, including claims that the lower court determined issues different from those placed before it.

A motion has also been filed seeking to restrain any disturbance of the officials pending the hearing of the appeal.

Reacting to the judgment, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke welcomed the ruling, describing it as consistent with constitutional provisions.

He directed the police to withdraw security cover from the affected chairmen and stop supporting their continued occupation of council secretariats.

The Osun APC, however, argued that the judgment also effectively nullifies the February 2025 local government elections conducted by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC).

The party urged the public to disregard what it called misleading information from the state government.

This development has intensified the political tension in Osun State over control of the local government councils.

A prominent Christian leader, Pastor Kingsley Okwuwe, has predicted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the 2027 presidential election. Obi’s exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was deemed a critical mistake by Pastor Okwuwe. Pastor Okwuwe warned of a ‘calamity’ for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the party of Peter Obi and Senator Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso.

FCT, Abuja – Pastor Kingsley Okwuwe of the Revival and Restoration Global Mission has prophesied that President Bola Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election because of a purported mistake by Peter Obi. Legit.ng reports that Obi was the presidential flagbearer of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, where he finished third with 6,101,533 votes. In May 2026, he emerged as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections.

In a video posted recently on his YouTube page, Pastor Okwuwe predicted that Obi and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, will lose the 2027 presidential election.

The preacher predicted a “calamity” for the NDC, claiming that the Obidient Movement leader took the wrong step by walking away from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He predicted that President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would secure re-election in the 2027 polls.

Okwuwe said:

“This APC government that you see in presidency, in 2027, they are going to regain power. I repeat it: they are going to regain power.”

Meanwhile, Obi has said his political ambition is driven not by a desire to occupy Nigeria’s highest office, but by his determination to see the country work for its citizens. The former Labour Party presidential candidate spoke during an interview on the Nevon HQ podcast hosted by journalist and media personality Rufai Oseni.

Obi said he is more concerned about fixing Nigeria’s challenges than pursuing power for his own sake.

He added:

“I am desperate to see young people have a means of livelihood. I am desperate to see people stop stealing public money. I am desperate to see Nigeria work.”

NDC Reveals Why Obi, Kwankwaso Won’t Take Its Anti-Defection Oath

Published

on

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has clarified that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, will not be required to sign the party’s newly introduced anti-defection oath.

Recall that the party recently rolled out the policy to curb the rising trend of elected officials abandoning their sponsoring platforms, which leaders argue weakens political organizations and damages voter confidence.

The party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, explained the stance during an interview on Channels Television’s  Politics Today on Wednesday.

He defended the legality of the measure, noting that political parties function as voluntary associations and their members are strictly bound by internal rules and constitutional provisions.

He dismissed criticisms that the oath violates the country’s ground norm, emphasizing that the requirement to sign the affidavit is fully backed by the NDC constitution.

However, Enekweizu disclosed that the party leadership has chosen to exercise administrative discretion to excuse its top two standard-bearers from the mandate.

“The constitution says everybody running under the platform of the party has to sign, but the party has taken the administrative decision that those required to sign in this instance do not include the presidential candidate and his vice,” Enekweizu stated.

According to the National Secretary, the primary target of the defensive policy is not the executive branch, but rather lawmakers who secure seats under the party’s umbrella only to defect to rival political movements shortly after taking office.

“Our main focus is not the governor; it’s not the president, it’s the national and state assembly members elected on the platform of our party,” he added.

He reiterated that the NDC is committed to building a lasting, durable political institution and will actively prevent politicians from exploiting the platform merely as a temporary stepping stone to public office.
